“'No pain, no gain' is for me, within aerobic sp “'No pain, no gain' is for me, within aerobic sport, the worst saying in the motivators play book” – Brett Sutton, Triathlon Coach
-
Often taken in the wrong context, the “no pain, no gain” mantra causes so much damage to too many athletes. Very rarely should endurance athletes get to a point of overall pain for exertion!
-
In specific sessions, with specific goals, “pain” may be desired, but in a controlled and precise fashion – each session having its own “pain” experience:
-
Long aerobic sessions are often a discomfort (pain) for the MIND and ego, having to apply control to the intensity to ensure you don’t go too hard!
-
Strength set in a swim, bike or run session should create an acute and isolated element of discomfort (pain) in the targeted muscle group responsible for the force application
-
High intensity sessions, overall, the most “painful” should create an equal discomfort in the mind, muscles and cardiovascular system – but be “comfortably uncomfortable”, not to the point of collapse / vomiting / headaches / etc.
-
Whichever session, whatever the discomfort goal, you should be recovering between reps / workouts and not feeling “done” for the day, irritable with family/friends/yourself, needing to sleep, overly / under hungry, excessively sore and needing to skip future sessions, etc
-
Rephrase your definition – “discomfort” not “pain” – be specific with your effort input, be disciplined, control your FOMO, remember that today’s session impacts tomorrows, and the day after, and ultimately your race performance

“Is it raining? That doesn't matter. There is a “Is it raining? That doesn't matter. There is a great advantage in training under unfavourable conditions. It is better to train under bad conditions, for the difference is then a tremendous relief in a race.” Emil Zatopek
-
A suitable quote on a day like this – heavy rain for those of us living and training in Stockholm
-
Training in “undesirable” conditions 🌧🌫❄has a huge benefit to our mental 🧠💪 resilience and performance 🏊‍♀️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♀️ in future adverse conditions.
-
Very rarely are we going to have perfect conditions! Too hot, too cold, too wet, too humid, too windy… BUT every one of these settings provides an OPPORTUNITY to learn. Maybe, PROBABLY, one of these adverse environments will be the conditions we face on race day, which means you will have gained the mental and physical skills needed to cope and make the right choices for optimal performance outcomes!
-
For those needing to train (or needing to leave the comfort of home for whatever reason), don’t dwell on the actions, prepare with the suitable clothing and get out! The first minute or two may suck, for our ego / inner-child, but thereafter our human / adult mind will become aware and start learning and ENJOY the opportunity to grow and toughen up!

“Confidence is only born out of one thing dem “Confidence is only born out of one thing demonstrated ability. It is not born of anything else. You cannot dream up confidence. You cannot fabricate it. You cannot wish it. You have to accomplish it.” #billparcells 🏈

EVERY TRAINING SESSION YOU START IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD YOUR ABILITY; following the session processes will develop your fitness 💓, your strength 💪, your skills, your intuition 🧠 and, thus, your self-confidence 🤩.
-
Don’t be fooled by those that appear outwardly confident… those that show off and seek attention through bragging about their training sessions, who alter data to show false figure/strengths, who belittle others 😠 to portray themselves as the alpha 🦍, and ruin the spirit of the sport 😕 in an attempt to hide their insecurity with external praise and social status
-
Instead, quietly absorb the experience gained from all the work you put in and accomplish – THERE IS NO BAD SESSION!
-
Believe your repetition and commitment is going to help you in the future; to control your actions and choices, to push through and adapt to adversity, enabling you to reach your goals AND to inspire others.
-
Earning self-confidence is easy if you COMMIT to the sessions, stay PRESENT / AWARE in the sessions, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY and LEARN from the sessions.
-
Attempting to fool yourself won’t work – when push comes to shove, race day or a tough training session, you won’t believe in abilities, people will see through your dramatics, and you will crumble.

“Recognise the importance of patience in the que “Recognise the importance of patience in the quest for strength and fitness. This is a lifelong pursuit which will serve you well in all areas of life.” Jim Wendler
-
It takes time to adapt to stress. Training is stress. The body needs to be stressed if it is to adapt. But finding and applying the right amount of stress is important.
-
You cannot simply stress the body as hard as possible all the time in the hope for faster adaptations. It is easy to stress the body but hard for the body to adapt.
-
Look longer-term, be patient with your training application, applying small doses of stress regularly over many weeks, months and years, so your body can continually absorb and adapt.
-
Do this and you will continually become more resilient, stronger, fitter and faster. Even when you get “old”, you can still become relatively more resilient, stronger, fitter and faster – don’t let age become an excuse to rush NOW and GIVE UP later!
